194: “It Should Be Payback Time For ‘The Strabaddies’!”

One really has to wonder. Just what are the Straban Township Supervisors [long known here as “The Strabaddies”] receiving in return for their lop-sided treatment in favor of the proposed slots parlor in the township. Here are some of their lowlights:

They have repeatedly denied the citizens of Straban Township a full voice in the debate over the casino. They shut off debate at the Supervisor’s meetings after hearing 90 minutes from the casino developers, and 10 minutes from the citizens of the township. This is standard practice.

They stood by and did absolutely nothing last summer while members of their own planning commission were publicly assailed and humiliated, and had their character besmirched by the casino developer’s attorneys, forcing most of them to either quit or recuse themselves from making a planning commission recommendation on the whether the casino project meets the requirements of current zoning laws. “The Strabaddies” stood by and did nothing when their planning commission members were taken to court by the casino Consigliere, resulting in Judge Kuhn tossing one member, but not the second one, which forced the next move by “The Strabaddies”, which was to consider the entire commission recused!

Now that the planning commission is out of the way, the Supervisors short circuited the process and made the planning committee’s decision for them, ruling that the casino project could proceed once licensing is established.

Can there be any doubt where the supervisors stand on this matter? Can there be any doubt they have run roughshod over the process and their own constituents so that David LeVan and his out of town investor cronies can build their empire in Straban Township? One also wonders how the great Wally Davis sleeps at night. Oh, I forgot, lawyers do not have consciences. So he can keep on keepin’ on, working for the developers and their lackeys “The Strabaddies”, and totally ignoring his responsibilities to the citizens of Straban Township.

Perhaps, given that record of abuse of their own constituents and their disdain for due process, the Concerned Citizens of Straban Township could take a page from LeVan’s book and take the Supervisors to court demanding their decision be overturned because of undue bias FOR the casino! Turnabout time.

This crop of supervisors in Straban is perhaps the nastiest, most uncivil, uncaring bunch of supervisors to come down the pike in a long time. Straban voters have only themselves to blame as they elected them, in particular, they have reelected Jay McDannel numerous times. These folks are close friends of developers and vote their wallets. They speak out of both sides of their mouths, and constantly are caught saying one thing while doing another. They operate in secrecy, have been known to use intimidation tactics on folks who oppose them, and are not above skirting the law to get something going for their pet development projects.

In essence “The Strabaddies” want to see the destruction of agriculture as a thriving business in Straban Township, allowing all their green and open space to be paved over. They want to destroy the small town image of Gettysburg and have been working to choke off the borough for decades. When they are done, the township of Straban will be the City of Straban, and will eventually make Gettysburg an afterthought.

These men are intent on squeezing Gettysburg from the north and east, while Mount Joy supervisors are squeezing from the south. Cumberland Township is heading in the same direction.

We’ve never wished bad economic news on anybody, but we certainly would love to see the bottom fall out of the housing market. That would slow the urbanization of Straban and Mount Joy and Liberty and Butler townships to a crawl. It would hurt a lot of people, in particular the small contractors who build the houses. But it would stop these destructive, vicious township supervisors from allowing more development in their agricultural townships.

A pox on all their houses!

Good luck to CCST! We hope you can be successful in challenging the township supervisors for bias. Take it all the way to the US Supreme Court. That should tie up the casino project for several years at the least. Their record is there for all to see, in spite of what developer friendly John Messeder writes in the developer friendly Gettysburg Slimes fish wrap (it ceased being a legitimate newspaper years ago).

The citizens of Adams County do not have a lot of friend in high places in their own county. Elected officials are pro-development. Those official appoint other officials to positions of authority who are also pro-development. It happens in all the townships. Candidates run for Supervisor with money from developers, so how do you think they are going to vote? And the Chamber of Commerce? They are business people, folks, and they see $$$ in development.

Wake up Adams County! There is no such thing as inevitable development! Come November turn out the incumbents. All of them, state and local. They are not working for you, they are working for the monied interests. And you are paying for it in so many ways, and will for decades to come unless you stop it now.

But most of all, stop LeVan, stop “The Strabaddies”. They are all pure evil in their intentions.
